HAWKMAN vs. THUNDERSTRIKE by Keith Pollard

Keith Pollard is a respected professional in the american industry. Born in 1950 he started his career in 1974 drawing Marvel books like Master of Kung Fu or Stonishing Tales. He gained a well deserved reputation of reliable and fast penciller when he worked simultaneously in three top titles from Marvel: Fantastic Four, The Mighty Thor and The Amazing Spider-man by the late 70's, early 80's.

I specially remember some fantastic issues from a book called Vigilante, were I think he raised his art to his best level, producing some very entertaining books from an almost unknown character, alongside with writer Marv Wolfman.

Retired in 1994, the image here is a comission property of a lucky guy called Michael Rankins.

HAWKMAN by Alex Toth

Alex Toth was one of those artists that were a reference for comic-book fans, but even more for pros who really respected his dynamic, clear and synthetic style. Specially appreciated is his long run as Hanna-Barbera design artist for different animated series through the 60's and the 70's.

The Hawkman piece here was a part of Toth work for the Superfriends animated series, where a small and revisited version of the Justice League of America developed some colorful and for-all-ages adventures. The series ran from 1973 to 1986 on ABC and is still remembered because the reigning happy and innocent tone of the stories.

AN OLD STORY

Some time ago, probably by the end of the seventies, the first superhero comic-book arrived to my young hands. I clearly remember the feelings I had when I started to read those pages. I automatically fell in love with the characters, the concepts, the costumes. It was my very first introduction to the superheroes and to he DC Universe.

I'm sorry to say that the spanish edition of that book was really a mess. A lot of years later, I discovered that it had the colors changed and that they even lost a page from the story. That was when I found that the issue was really Justice League of America #104. And, as is commonly said, my life wouldn't be the same again.

The book had everything: a funny script, great art by legendary Dick Dillin, terrible villains, Hector Hammond and the Shaggy Man that almost defeated the League alone, and one amazing roster in the powerful team.

And, as a plus, I had the introduction to one of the most famous love and hate relationships in comic-book history: Hawkman and Green Arrow. Batman, the brain of the team, has the brilliant idea of putting together Katar and Oliver in the satellite headquarters cleaning session. A decission that only could led to disaster. As you can see in these images :-)

WHO's WHO by Joe Kubert

Here's probably the most famous pic from the modern Wingeg Wonder. It belongs to the DC Comics Who's Who the encyclopedia in comic book form, listing the characters, places, and things in the DC Universe and published in 1985. Joe Kubert, the author and graphic creator of modern Hawkman is an american comic-book living legend that portrayed maybe the finest version of Katar Hol possible.
